Prof. Nordin Hasan is the Director for the International Council of Science (ICSU) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Malaya (1967 -1971) and the Faculty of Science, University of London (1971-1974) where he obtained his PhD. He was a professor of zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1983 – 2003) and was the founding director of the University’s Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI). He was appointed Emeritus Professor (Environment and Development) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2005.
His science and policy-based work is well integrated with the needs of the local, state and federal government agencies with whom he works closely on the issue of environment and development. He serves on many national and international advisory and technical boards and committees and was a Commissioner of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) from 1993-1997. He was the Co-Chair of the Initiative on Science and Technology for Sustainability (ISTS)‘s Steering Committee for Asia. He currently serves on two International Advisory Boards of Academia Sinica, that of the International Center of Excellence on Disaster Risks, and the Center for Sustainability Science.
